Art Coco

Introduction
Art Coco’s product line is anchored by a range of spectacular lamps and shades crafted from natural coconut fibre, that brings the warm light and vibrant colours of Africa to any interior. Other products displaying different facets of the coconut fibre are trays, boxes, picture frames and Christmas decorations of stunning originality.

Coconut fibre, the raw material for these artistic creations, grows on the palm tree, supporting the new leaf which when mature has no need of the fibre support, dropping this to the ground. Its only traditional use is for kindling, and no other product incorporates it, so it is a new material, totally eco-friendly and naturally sustainable. Swahili villagers collect the fibre in sheaves providing them with vital income.

In Art Coco’s workshop, the skills of local crafts people are married with the training and experience of Sarah Gavaghan, a qualified artist and formerly a highly successful designer and manufacturer of fashion-world hats in New York. Sarah’s skills are augmented by those of her partner Nigel Spencer, whose artistic background and lifelong residence in Mombasa provide vital support.

Art Coco is an exciting venture for Nigel and Sarah and they bring to it not only their enthusiasm for the natural material they work with but also a desire to expand their markets, particularly internationally, and so continue to provide income and opportunity for the craftspeople of their home area.
