Saangapi
“Saangapi”, the Swahili phrase for “what is the time”, encapsulates what we do: Make unusual clocks with an African theme. All of our clocks are hand made by Kenyan craftsmen and women, using natural materials found in Kenya.
Some clocks incorporate antique beads used over the centuries for trading across the continent; others have beads used in jewellery by various tribes in different countries, including the Maasai of Kenya and Tanzania.
Others use soapstone, quarried and hand-carved in western Kenya and yet others use traditional mats woven from natural sisal plant fibres and banana leaves from Machakos in Eastern Kenya or reeds from Lake Turkana. Our Madagascan range uses a fabric hand woven from raffia.

Each of our specialty range of clocks is a unique piece of art, made from unusual materials such as drift wood, coconut palm and dhow wood. The dhow wood comes from old traditional fishing boats, known locally as “jahazi”, who ended their working days on the ivory white sands of Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast.
Each clock is individually packed in a cardboard box using recycled materials to protect it on its journey to you and making it even more attractive as a gift for your family and friends.
